Kent Association for the Blind (KAB), a charity that looks after people who are experiencing sight loss or have a sight impairment, visited us on Wednesday 28th February to lead our Assembly.  We heard about how KAB supports those with sight loss by helping reduce the impact their sight loss has on their daily lives.  We also learnt how to look after our eyes by having regular sight tests, protecting our eyes from the sun and other injury and making sure we eat a healthy diet and get lots of exercise!

We learnt what sight impairment might look like and what amazing tools and gadgets are available to help such as braille, specialist talking equipment, electronic magnifiers and much more.

Neptune Class were lucky enough to spend some time on IRIS, KAB's mobile sight centre, where they got to try out special glasses to show them what different impairments feel like.  While wearing these glasses they used a Liquid Level Indicator to pour water into a cup without it overflowing, and also tried out long, guide and symbol canes.  The class also used a James Bond like device, no bigger than a pack of starbursts, to have text read to them!  The devise uses a smart camera and AI technology to instantly read out text it is pointed at.  A big thanks to Zaffi who was recruited for the day as an honorary KAB colleague, he did a fabulous job helping the team demonstrate all the different equipment!
