Greek culture day
Today in Mercury class we took part in Greek Day. Before arriving, we were asked to come dressed in ancient Greek clothing made from linen and other features to show the traditional clothing. In the morning, Mercury class did a lesson comparing the two city-states of Athens and Sparta. Focusing on comparing the similarities and differences of each city-state based on the categories of location, government, education, warfare and children. After researching these categories, we then had a class debate, discussing where we would rather live; Athens or Sparta. For this class debate we had a special judge, Mr Sermbezis to join us, who is from Greece, to help us deliberate. We then voted and found that most of us would prefer to live in Sparta rather than Athens.
In the afternoon, Mr Sermbezis took us all to Greek school where we learnt how to say the Greek alphabet and say some simple greetings. We also learnt how to count to 20 and beyond. After our Greek school we were hungry, so Mercury class treated ourselves to making a traditional Greek salad and Mr Sermbezis brought us a spinach pie (spanokotiropita) made with spinach, feta cheese and filo pastry. It was yummy! Towards the end of the day, we were then feeling all energised to then take part in some traditional Greek dancing to Zorba the Greek. It was so much fun! We all had a great day and learnt so much about ancient Greek culture and the more modern traditions that make Greece such a wonderful place to visit.
